Skoda Fabia
The Skoda Fabia was first produced in 1999 and has become one of Skodas leading brands. The original Fabia, which is know as the Mark.1 was made up to 2007, when it was repalced by the current model which is the Mark.2. The Skoda brand, which is now part of the Volkswagen Group, has been elevated by the use of VW parts and is now seen as a very strong and reliable brand.
The Fabia is sold as two main models, the original supermini and also the larger Fabia Estate. The standard hatchback model comes with a selection of petrol or diesel engines, starting at 1.2 and going up to a 1.6 TDI version. The 1.2 offers drivers a maximum speed of 101mph with 0-62mph at 14.9 seconds. Although not the fastest, it is certainly enough for those driving around town and supremely efficient. If you go for the 1.6 TDI then you can expect a top speed of 117mph with 0-62mph lowered to a reasonable 10.9 seconds.
Skoda excel at cost effective driving and the 1.2 has an urban consumption rate of 38.7 km per gallon and this can go up to over 50 mpkm. With a tank limit of 45 litres, you can travel a long way in the Fabia. Incredibly the 1.6 can produce 55.4 miles per gallon in urban driving and the car can achieve an astounding 67 kmpg on the open road. All cars come with a 5 speed manual gearbox and ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum brakes for the rear.
The standard equipment on the Fabia is also impressive as it includes an adjustable drivers seat, a height and reach adjustable steering wheel, an exterior temperature gauge, radi and CD player and a split rear seat. There are also plenty of optional extras for the Fabia and you can customise your car with a 3 or 4 spoke leather steering wheel, a cooled glove box, heated front seats or even air conditioning.
The Fabia Estate also comes with a number of different petrol and diesel engines ranging from 1.2 up to 1.6. The 5 door estate also offers more interior room but suprisingly this does not hamper the cars performance. The 1.2 has a maximum speed of 102mph and can cover 0-62mph on 15 seconds exactly. The 1.6 diesel Fabia estate can achieve a top speed of 118mph, which is actually 1mph faster than the smaller version, although acceleration is slightly slower at 11 seconds for 0-62mph.
The fuel economy of the Fabia estate is also very good as the Estate only weighs an extra 20kg over the standard Fabia. The 1.2 estate can do a comfortable 38.7 kmpg around town and can manage 51 kmpg on a long run. The 1.6 has excellent economy figures and can do 55.4 in an urban setting with up to 67 kmpg being achievable.
The Skoda Fabia and Fabia Estate make a great car for those looking to purchase the car outright. They are very cheap to buy compared to toher manufacturers and the efficiency figures are tough to beat meaning this is a very cost effective car to run. They also make good lease hire cars as there are plenty of them available and they need little maintenance work making them very cheap and easy to run. They are a good solid car that can run for many miles for those on a limited budget or if you do not have spare for a larger saloon.
In 2003 Skoda released a hothatch version of the Skoda Fabia called the Fabia VRS. This was basked on the Mark.1 version of the car and was produced to compete with other smaller cars like the mini. It was only sold with Volkswagens 1.9 diesel engine, there was no petrol version, and it also had an added turbo. It was rated to cover 0-62mph in 9.5 seconds but many motoring magazines said it was even faster and could do it in just over 7 seconds. The car was designed to appeal to the younger male market. The last one was produced in 2007 so you are unlikely to see many of these around for hire or lease nowadays.
