Skoda Roomster
The Skoda Roomster was first announced at the Geneva Motor show in 2006 and the first sales were taken, although it did not get on the road fully until 2007. It is the Skoda model designed to fit in with the mini MPV market and the leisure activity vehicle market. It was named as a combination of "Room" and "Roadster" to showcase its dynamic driving as well as a spacious living room-like interior in the rear.
The Skoda Roomster comes in three main model trims for your choice. The Roomster S is the basic model and comes with Varioflex seating, dual position parcel shelf, MP3 stereo, body coloured bumpers and lots of storage. Next in the Roomster range is the Skoda Roomster SE. This is packed with air conditioning, a trip computer , interior chrome pack, electric heated door mirrors and 15 inch alloys. Finally, the Skoda Roomster Scount has rugged body mouldings, roof rails, aluminium pedals, a tyre pressure monitor and 16 inch Scount alloys and is aimed more toward the off-road and MPV market.
As with all Skoda, there is plenty of engine options to suit the customers spped requirements and also their pocket. Starting at the base level is a 1.2 12v which gives 70bhp. The TSI range of engines are all 1.2 but offer between 85 and 105 bhp. At the top end of the range is the 1.6 TDI turbo-charged diesel engine version offering the most power and these are also the most popular with those looking to hire a Roomster. The economy with these engines is also extremely good, with the 1.6 TDI producing 49.6 km per gallon. The fuel tank also has a capacity for 55 litres giving plenty of driving before you need to even think about a refuel stop.
Performance is also very impressive for a car of the Roomsters size and capacity. The 1.2 engine has a top speed of 99mph and can go from 0-62mph in 15.9 seconds. At the top end of the scale, the TDI diesel car can do up to 106mph and can do the 0-62mph in 13.3 seconds. Considering the Romster is designed for family driving and holidays with large amounts of luggage, the Roomster has performace which is more than plenty for town or motorway driving.
As the Roomster is aimed for family outings, safety has played a major part in the design process. All models come with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), MSR and dual rate brake booster. There is central locking for all models to make sure your belongings are safe and airbags are also included for the driver and passenger. The S model Roomster has drum brakes, whilst the SE and Scout models enjoy rear disc brakes for extra performance. The cars also come with an alarm system and an immobiliser. There are also plenty of other interior extras that a potential buyer can choose from including air conditioning, a trip computer and rear parking sensors to name just a few. There is also an Estate version of the Roomster which gives even more storage spacve for those long summer holidays.
Although the Skoda Octavia is probably the most used Skoda in terms of hire, there are also plenty of Roomsters on the hire market. These are aimed more at the comsumer than the business market, due to the car being aimed at space and relaibility than performance. If you have a small car for commute, then many people choose to hire a Roomster for a holiday car as it will allow all to travel in comfort and the extra space is essential for all those suitcases and bags. With the large windows in the rear, visibility is ideal for passengers and especially smaller children.
